Italy's forgotten fibreglass starlet
Presented at the 1963 Turin Motor Show, the Autobianchi Stellina was a small barchetta with a fibreglass body designed by Carrozzeria Boneschi, built on the Fiat 500 / Autobianchi Bianchina platform. It was the first Italian production car to feature a synthetic body — an astonishing technical achievement for the time.
Production ran from 1963 to 1966, yielding 502 examples across two series. The Phase 1 used the 767 cc twin-cylinder engine of the Bianchina; the Phase 2, introduced for 1965, adopted the larger 792 cc unit from the Autobianchi Primula, earning the nickname Stellina 800. Despite its novelty, the car was a commercial failure — priced above larger, more powerful rivals — and production ended quietly.
Today the Stellina is among the rarest Italian sports cars of the 1960s. This register aims to document every surviving example worldwide.
